The U.S. National Arboretum is a research and education facility and a living museum. Established in 1927, the Arboretum is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

The Arboretum is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service as a division of the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

The arboretum was established in 1927 by an act of Congress.

The Arboretum occupies 446 acres (1.81 km2).
