Completed in 1915 with the aid of prisoners, the Arkansas State Capitol was built on the site of the State Penitentiary. The grounds contain many memorials including a Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a memorial to Confederate Women of Arkansas.

The exterior of the Capitol is made of limestone, which was quarried in Batesville, Arkansas.

The front doors of the building were purchased from Tiffany's in New York. They are made of bronze, and measure 10 feet (3 m) tall. The doors are four inches (10 cm) thick.
