The museum is the former home of the Dupont family and contains one of the finest collections of Americana to be found anywhere. The buildings and grounds were designed by the DuPonts to look like an English country estate.
Winterthur was the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969), a renowned antiques collector and horticulturist.

The museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying American art and antiques, especially those from 1640 to 1860.

Winterthur is situated on 979 acres (4 km2), with 60 acres (0.2 km2) of naturalistic garden.
