It took nearly 30 years to complete construction of the building because of politics, World War I, and a lack of funding.

President Abraham Lincoln established the Department of Agriculture on May 15, 1862.

Construction was begun in 1903, but the building was not completed until 1930.

It is the only building of a Cabinet level department located on the National Mall.
