The Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art first opened on February 20, 1872. It moved to its present location in 1880.

The area around the Metropolitan Museum of Art is commonly referred to as "Museum Mile." The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Neue Galerie are located near the Met's main building.
