Virginia State Symbols

Each state in the United States of America is unique. The people and legislature of Virginia have selected the following state symbols to represent their state's individual environment and culture.

Many symbols on the Great Seal of Virginia come from Roman mythology.

The seal features the Roman goddess Virtus standing over a defeated opponent. Virtus is dressed in Amazonian garb, and hold a spear and a sheathed sword. She represents the virtues of heroism, righteousness, freedom, and valor. She stands in a classical victor's pose over a fallen tyrannical foe, whose crown lies on the ground. The state's motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" ("Thus Always to Tyrants") appears at the lower edge.

The Virginia State Flag

Adopted in 1776, Virginia's State Flag features a deep blue field containing the seal of Virginia with the Latin motto " Sic Semper Tyrannis" - "Thus Always to Tyrants".

The two figures are acting out the meaning of the motto. Both are dressed as warriors. The woman, Virtue, represents Virginia. The man holding a scourge and chain shows that he is a tyrant. His fallen crown is nearby.
