This sculpture originally stood at an intersection in Paris but was removed when a subway was constructed. It was placed here by the Fairmount Park Art Association as part of a movement to beautify the park with sculpture and landscaping.

When the Art Association purchased the statue in 1890, it placed Joan on the East side of the Girard Avenue Bridge. It was moved to its present site in 1948.

The Statue of Joan was cast by Emmanuel Fremiet in 1874. The sculpture depicts the French heroine riding into the battle of Orleans in 1429.
